Virginia Retail Merchants Association (VRMA) is a non-profit trade association whose founding in 1905 predicted a successful endeavor to improve business conditions for retail merchants in the Commonwealth of Virginia. One hundred eleven years later, VRMA remains the respected voice of Virginia retail merchants among local, state, and federal governing bodies. While this year marks VRMA’s 112-year anniversary, for our “well-established” retailers this year also marks over 60 years of loyal membership to VRMA!

Since the commencement of the Virginia General Assembly of 1905, VRMA organizes in Richmond to present the common interests of individual merchants before elected members. Large retailers from national chains to local “Mom and Pops” and related businesses such as shopping center developers comprise our membership.

Our modern day association membership includes thousands of retail venues employing over 20% of Virginia’s labor force.

VRMA evolves with the business issues of the day and is always present when the Virginia legislatures meet to resolve problems affecting our businesses and ensure conditions for future sustainability. VRMA provides Delegates and Senators with current, reliable statistics, talking points, and research information. Our longstanding history consists of many legislative battles fought for Virginian retailers, by knowledgeable and persuasive legislators that conduct civilized debate on our behalf.

VRMA is a tax-exempt organization supported by member dues. The Association governs by a diverse 18–member Board of Directors operating within Virginia. Selected board members not only represent the different geographic areas of the state but also include a cross-section of retailers and related businesses. The Board of Directors meets twice a year to set association policy and the Legislative Committee meets regularly. The full membership meets at VRMA’s Annual Meeting off-session and VRMA’s Day on the Hill and Legislator’s Reception held during every General Assembly Session.

The Association’s credibility lies in our longevity and our commitment to serving the current trending needs of our member companies. To that end, there has been excellent stability and participation within the Association since its inception.
